Um Myal Village Rehabilitation Project, Syria
Projects
Ongoing
Rural Aleppo, Syria | 2023 Partnership: IWlab Located in a historic earthen dome village in northern Syria, Um Myal was largely abandoned during the Syrian war. This project aims to revive the village through a multi-disciplinary approach that balances heritage preservation with sustainable socio-economic development. Early efforts included providing basic services and stabilizing adobe structures to encourage residents' return. The project focused on restoring traditional dome and roofing systems, reviving ancestral mud plastering techniques, and fostering close collaboration with the local community. By integrating heritage conservation with contemporary needs, Um Myal seeks to reconnect building traditions with daily life, ensuring that restoration efforts are rooted in both memory and future resilience.
